Laurel Halo belongs to the generation of producers who listened to abstract clicks ’n’ cuts, queer ambient, digital R&B or the complete discography of Detroit techno labels from their hard drives. Halo synthesizes this into electronic pop songs that oscillate between the lightness of the Tumblr user interface and the entropy of a sticker-covered laptop. More

DUCKTAILS

14.09.2017, Gewölbe, Köln

Ducktails is the recording name of New Jersey–based musician Matthew Mondanile (also former member of Real Estate), who took it on in 2008 as a student at Hampshire College, releasing a steady stream of acclaimed records on far-flung labels with album art by artists like Jan Anderzen. The project trafficks in the spaced-out pop songs one might pick up in out-of-the-way thrift stores or deep in bins of 1970s private-press records—it's a casually sophisticated, genre-eluding pop ambiance. Mondanile shifts among numerous modes when performing, appearing alone with arrays of instruments or with a full-fledged band and guest singers. Mondanile tours abroad extensively, and has performed at the Whitney Museum of American Art and MoMA PS1. He will be touring in support of his new album Bonfire of the Vanities on guitar & electronics for this upcoming performance.

SOPHIA KENNEDY

28.09.2017, Gewölbe, Köln

Sophia Kennedy has already delivered one of this year’s best albums with her eponymous debut. This wonderful pop gem was released on DJ Koze’s Pampa label, which is more well-known as a platform for cultured dance-floor tracks. However, the fact that you can also dance to Sophia Kennedy’s music should be common knowledge by now. The Hamburg-based Baltimorean’s songs may be sparsely orchestrated, but they brim with fantastic ideas, unexpected twists and turns, and clever lyrics. “Build me a house where I can live in,” is only one of the many hits on the album. In her live shows she is accompanied by our favourite Hamburger Mense Reents, an experience that will leave you wanting her to build you a house too! Not to be missed!

MIXTAPE #12: THE PASTELS

Even though The Pastels are most often associated with the jangly-guitar pop sound of the C86 generation, the band was actually formed five years earlier – back when rhythm-led postpunk was still very much in vogue. As their mixtape for WEEK-END Fest attests, Stephen McRobbie and Katrina Mitchell also share this generation’s love of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-American music; rocksteady from The Wailers, soul from Bettye Swann and funk from

Sly and the Family Stone is interspersed with music by forerunners of their own sound: Moe Tucker’s charmingly raw solo recordings and lo-fi pop from Television Personalities – on whose label The Pastels released their first single. Of course, their kindred spirits from Japan, Maher Shalal Hash Baz – who in turn first released in Europe on The Pastels’ Geographic label – are also represented.
