Artisttext

Laurel Halo belongs to the generation of producers who listened to abstract clicks ’n’ cuts, queer ambient, digital R&B or the complete discography of Detroit techno labels from their hard drives. Halo synthesizes this into electronic pop songs that oscillate between the lightness of the Tumblr user interface and the entropy of a sticker-covered laptop. She stands out in the Berlin electronic scene, always asking clever and sometimes slightly uncomfortable questions on theoretical panels. On her latest album “Dust”, the colourful chaos of Japanese synth pop meets Brazilian rhythms, while the macho posturing of funk meets the most ostracized element of pop history, the saxophone. Halo unites all of this in her signature sound, which she has developed over three albums and countless EPs. Streaking samples, fragments of melodies in irregular orbits and mysterious singing with absurd lyrics. At WEEK-END we will be blessed with the experience of one of her fantastic live sets, which sound out the space between enigmatic electro-pop and straight, no-nonsense techno. Laurel Halo can’t really choose one way or the other. Fortunately.

FRI, OCT 27, 2017 - 11:00 PM

Artisttext

Both Scott Walker and Alex Chilton first really blossomed as eccentric solo artists after having successful careers in bands. Now Shintaro Sakamoto is following a similar path. He certainly enjoyed huge success in his homeland of Japan as the singer and guitarist of psychedelic rock band Yura Yura Teikoku. Since they broke up in 2010, he’s been working on solo material that is destined to catapult him beyond the status of insider tip to the international stage – Devendra Banhart and Mac DeMarco are already fans. And now Sakamoto is set to play his very first solo concert – at WEEK-END Fest of course. Such a thrilling mixture of completely unorthodox musical ingredients hasn’t been heard since the best days of Beck or Stereolab: Hawaiian guitars, banjo picking, barbershop choruses, robot voices and yacht-rock vibes are mixed together into a colourful cocktail that is as musically complex as it is catchy. Easy-listening funk for dancing on a volcano.

HOLLY HERNDON

FRI, OCT 27, 2017 – 9:30 PM

Artisttext

Holly Herndon is pretty much the antithesis of retro. Her laptop “has more emotional content than a violin could ever dream of” as she explained to the Guardian in 2015. She knows more about computers and music than most: she is currently doing a PhD at the renowned Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University in San Francisco. Herndon’s ingenious laptop music is, however, anything but an academic matter. She earned her street cred in Berlin, where she spent the weekends of her youth dancing in techno clubs. As a child she was shaped by the church music of her home in Tennessee, where her father worked as a pastor. All of these influences can be heard on her last album “Platform,” which attracted a great deal of attention in 2015. Techno beats meet complex, shredded choir voices and previously unheard electronic sounds and noises – this is the real music of the future! Herndon will present new material at WEEK-END Fest that will released on her next album in the autumn.

JUANA MOLINA

FRI, OCT 27, 2017 – 8:00 PM

Artisttext

Juana Molina is the exorcist of the South American Tropicalia movement. As a child she strummed simple melodies on a guitar and sold records by the thousands, but it wasn’t what she wanted. So she began studying architecture. She then became the star of an Argentinian sitcom, before realising this too was not what she wanted. Finally she dedicated herself to music – this time only doing it the way that she wanted. And her music is as whimsical as her resume. With each album Juana Molina delves ever deeper into the realms of psychedelia, voodoo and self-abandoned pop music. Her meandering songs are feverish dreams that seem to be never ending. They fluctuate between the cosy warmth of a sit-in and the bottomless pit of an acid-trip nightmare. Molina kicks the door to surreality wide open with her latest album “Halo”. Her songs are atmospheric images made up of fragmented, suggested melodies and associative text collages. It is music that is so strange that it is impossible to do anything else but listen.

How do you get the great songwriter Devendra Banhart to come to Cologne and WEEK-END Fest exclusively? You tell him that Shintaro Sakamoto is also coming to play his first ever live solo concert – Banhart is a huge fan. Of course, he’s not just coming to see Sakamoto. The 36- year-old will give a unique concert in Cologne, accompanied by the wonderful Rundfunk- Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld, made famous by Jan Böhmermann’s TV show 'Neo Magazin Royale'. If you watch the show regularly, you will be aware of how masterfully the ensemble rearranges and reinterprets songs. This is also the orchestra’s exact remit for the show with Banhart: composer and WEEK-END long time participant Jherek Bischoff (who composed the string parts for Robert Forster in 2013) and the orchestra leaders Albrecht Schrader and Lorenz Rhode both have chosen pieces from the Californian’s back catalogue, which they will completely rearrange for strings, horns, and piano. Devendra Banhart, whose newest album 'Ape In Pink Marble' was released in 2016, is already looking forward to this one-off event: the continual deconstruction and reconstruction of his pieces is part of his own conception of himself as a songwriter.

PASCAL COMELADE

SAT, OCT 28, 2017 – 8:15 PM

Artisttext

Pascal Comelade has been making music for over forty years: over fifty albums have been released under his name, countless singles, EPs, compilations, soundtracks, collaborations with other musicians, including P. J. Harvey, Robert Wyatt, Jacki Liebezeit, and Faust. That he is still relatively unknown to a wider audience might be due to the fact that his work evades all categories. It is not “serious” enough for the Ernstmusik scene – he likes to play children’s instruments and has only a rudimentary education in piano – while he is too eccentric for the world of pop music. Whether he plays minimal music, tango, waltz or electro-wave, Comelade gives all of his projects a playfully light touch, which distinguishes him from role models such as Michael Nyman or Gavin Bryars. You can see him for the first time in Germany in almost twenty years at WEEK-END Fest!

Tropicália lives. 50 years after Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, and friends initiated this musical revolution, young musicians continue to develop the tradition in Brazil, mixing local sounds with psychedelic rock and pop melodies. The best of the most recent Neo-Tropicália albums is "Melhor do Que Parece” (2016) by the young band O Terno from Sao Paolo – the Brazilian critics all agree. The inventiveness, the masterly songwriting, and the soulful voice of the singer Tim Bernardes are evocative of Veloso’s pioneering albums from the late 1960s – but likewise of the Beatles. Word of the band’s qualities has already spread to other musicians: O Terno recorded with Tom Zé, and Bernardes has already written songs with David Byrne and Adriano Cintra of fellow Brazilian band CSS. It’s about time that the “Rock’n’Roll-Pop-Experimental Power Trio” (their own description) conquer Europe too.

JULIE BYRNE

NEW YORK, USA

SAT, OCT 28, 2017 – 7:00 PM

Artisttext

“I was made for the green, made to be alone”, Julie Byrne sings on the first song of her current album “Not Even Happiness”. At first that might sound a little trite coming from a twenty-something who lives in New York of all places. She has, however, only just arrived in the metropolis after a long unsettled period, living between Louisiana and Washington State, Massachusetts and Illinois. There, in Chicago, she recorded two live tapes in 2012/2013, which formed the foundation for her debut album “Rooms With Walls and Windows” (2014). This is a collection of folk songs, which are carried along by Byrne’s fluent acoustic-guitar finger picking and her voice, which music magazine Pitchfork appropriately described as “so delicate it sounds like she’s harmonizing with a breeze”. On her current album, “Not Even Happiness”, she has added a couple of ethereal accents from violinist Jake Falby – and the critics are hugely impressed: from Spin via the NME to the Guardian, everyone is celebrating the discovery of a new singer-songwriter talent. By the way, Byrne quickly found a piece of natural solitude in New York: her first job was a position as a park ranger in Central Park.

FRI 27 & SAT 28 OCT, 2017

Artisttext

WEEK-END is delighted to announce a cooperation with the Berlin based Sticker Removals Archive for this years festival. As archive and research platform Sticker Removals’ work is focussing on the Hype Sticker, the rarely loved and consequently removed ephemera that is promoting the LP or CD for the price of interfering with the release’s artwork. For the festival, Sticker Removals will dig deep into the near 30 year long hype sticker history of the Sheffield born (and now London based) independent label WARP RECORDS – and will map out an installation throughout the Stadthalle’s foyer that intends to shift the focus from a marginalised detail (of music culture and record manufacturing) towards an interdisciplinary discourse fusing music aesthetics and design thinking.
